How it works
A campaign that protects itself
Once 1,000 emails have gone out since it last started, a campaign pauses itself if 3 in every 100 bounce hard, and a variant that draws spam reports is paused on its own.
Every campaign watches its own results while it sends. If too many emails bounce, or one version draws spam reports, it stops itself before a bad list can harm your sending domains. Mailbox providers remember hard bounces, so a problem caught early costs far less.
Not every bounce counts
Every email gets an answer from the mail server that receives it.
| The server's answer | Counts against the campaign? |
|---|---|
| Delivered | No: all good |
| No such mailbox (a hard bounce) | Yes |
| A full mailbox | No |
| A server asking to try later | No |
Too many hard bounces, and it stops
- Nothing is judged until 1,000 emails have gone out since the campaign last started.
- Then, if 3 or more in every 100 have bounced hard, the campaign pauses itself.
- The emails it had queued are cleared, and nothing more goes out.
One version can stop on its own
Spam reports are watched one version at a time. Versions are lettered A, B, C and so on.
- If one version draws too many spam reports, that version is paused automatically.
- The other versions keep sending.
- If every version is paused, the campaign pauses.
When a campaign pauses itself
Open the campaign's report. A Campaign Auto-Paused banner says why it stopped.
Read what to check. For bounces, it says: This usually indicates poor list quality or a sending domain issue. Clean your list, remove invalid addresses, and verify your sending domain before resuming.
Once that's sorted, press Resume, on the campaign's page or on the campaigns list.
Resuming clears the old reason and starts the count again. Only what's sent after the resume is judged.
Every list is cleaned before it sends, which keeps hard bounces down from the start: Why every list is cleaned.
Why it stops itself
- Mailbox providers remember hard bounces.
- A list with a problem is caught early, before the rest of it goes out.
- Your sending domains keep their good name.
