How it works
What starts a sequence
A sequence starts only on one person's own action on a campaign you name and sent them (a click in it, its landing page form or a reply), never on a list, a date, a score or an open.
A sequence never starts on its own. It starts with one person's own action on one of your campaigns, and only a campaign that was sent to them. The same rules sit under every way in, so a sequence always follows someone who showed interest.
What starts one, and what never does
| Starts one | Never starts one |
|---|---|
| A click in the campaign you name: any link, or only the one you choose | Any campaign, rather than one you name |
| The form on that campaign's landing page | A form on your website |
| A reply to that campaign | A list, a date, a score or an open |
Only a person's click counts. Real people, not machines explains how machines are left out.
When they do more
A person is in one sequence per campaign at a time. Say a click starts theirs:
- If they then fill in its form, they move to the sequence the form starts, because a form beats a click.
- A reply beats a form.
- Another click never moves them.
Why it's this strict
- Only someone the campaign was sent to can start it.
- Each person goes through a sequence once, ever.
- Adding someone by hand, with Add to sequence, follows the same rules.
- If one campaign suddenly starts far more people on one sequence in an hour than one at a time explains, new starts pause, and the sequence tells you why.
See a sequence's starts
Open Sequences. The Starts when someone column shows what starts each one, and the campaign it's on: Clicks a link in, Fills in the form from or Replies to. A sequence with no start says Added by hand.

Open a sequence.
Open its Starts tab. Every start it has is here.
Each start reads as a sentence: When someone clicks a link, fills in its landing page form, or replies, on the campaign you choose. A click can be any link, or Only one link.
To set up a sequence and its starts, follow Follow up with a sequence.
